The blonde woman fiddled with a red mask on her lap. She had to be a slave, and I didn’t envy her. Slaves wore nothing but a red mask. I probed her. Her excitement and anticipation burst in purple waves lapping at the car’s ceiling. It scraped my skin like nails. I called back my power. Obviously, the girl was looking forward to experiencing Le Chat’s obscenities.

The road sloped, and one turn followed another. Black silhouettes of trees lined the road and obscured the view of the harbour.

“What’s the gentleman’s name?” I asked, interrupting Lord Radford kissing his wife’s neck.

Lady Radford waved a hand. “You don’t need to know.”

“Is he a Super? At least, I should know if he possesses powers.”

“No. He isn’t a Super.”

I stifled a sigh of relief. The pills should work then.

The car slowed, and we drove on a gravel road, judging by the way the car rocked slightly. A black stone manor rose from the middle of a lawn like a disease from the earth. Yellow lights poured from its windows and illuminated the bushes and flowerbeds, radiating fake cheerfulness.

The car stopped at the front door, and we climbed out.

This entrance for the senior members of the club was definitely better than the other one. Murk, Jamie, Victor, and I had to trek on a mountain track when we had gone to Le Chat.

I shuddered and circled myself, staring at the front door as if it were the gaping mouth of a monster. In a few hours, I wouldn’t be the same person I was now. If Effie’s drug didn’t work, a stranger would take me.
